Discussion Post: 5 Drawbacks of Being a Reader (or 4 cause I can’t really think of 5 πŸ§)

Hey Pals!! Today, I am going to be sharing 5 Drawbacks of Being a Reader…kind of.

So, being a reader, we readers are constantly in the habit of telling people the benefits of reading and just how much reading helps us and brings us happiness. But every thing in life has its disadvantages and while we may try to oversee them at all points, we can’t deny that this beautiful, heavenly and joyous act of reading also has some drawbacks. Today, I am going to be sharing 5 such drawbacks that I have come across. Here they are are:

Note: This is a discussion post, so feel free to share your veiews down in the comments.

1: People expect me to be a writer

While reading increases our vocabulary and broadens our imagination, it doesn’t mean that every reader aspires to be a writer someday. It doesn’t mean that every reader sees in them the potential to be a writer someday. I personally, have been in several situations where people not only want me, but expect me to be a writer, considering I read so much and also post tons of writing blogs. And this may come as a surprise but I am not sure if I really want to be a writer.

I think that I have fine writing skills, not maybe good but fine, and if I try, I can become quite an author. But there is just so much pressure that it takes the fun away. It may not really sound like much of a drawback, but sometimes it can be petty overwhelming for me.

2: It makes me hate the real world to an extent that is not healthy

We all know why readers read- to escape reality. Sometimes, I start to think so much about the lives of book characters that I begin hating my life and begin overthinking everything about it, and it has changed my outlook on several things that I would have preferred to see in a different way. At times I just feel like all I want is to escape this reality, to run away from it, and it makes me so ungrateful yet I still keep feeling this way. And it is not a healthy way to feel at all as it gives me nothing but pain.

3: It harms my eyesight

I don’t understand why people aren’t bothered by this at all, considering that fact that I freak out on a daily basis due to this. The major reason I avoid e-books and buy physical copies of books only if the audiobook is not available is due to the fact that I already wear glasses and don’t want my number to increase any further. I already use mobile phone too much, and reading through laptop or phone further adds to my screen time.

4: At times, reading gets me so engrossed that it affects my schedule

Except…there’s only one thing in it: yes, you guessed right- reading πŸ™‚

We all know how this feels. We keep reading a book so much that all we care for are the lives of our favourite characters, and I know full well how freaking hard it is to put the book down and study for your finals which are happening in less than a fortnight. At times, I just keep on reading and waste valuable time in that, and regret later when I begin stressing about exams!

I had to think A LOT to come up with the final point and it still does not fully apply to me, and hence the title of the post is the way it is. So, forgive me!! πŸ˜‚

5: People keep judging for no reason

I’ll be honest, I’m besides the point in my life where I’m bothered by people who judge me due to the fact that I’m reading. But sometimes, it can be a little exhausting. But as I said again, it doesn’t bother me much and not many people judge me anyways, but when they do, all it does it remove them from my good books. So yeah, I included this point taking in view that just because I’m not bothered, doesn’t mean others aren’t. Some people, I’m pretty sure, might find it really hard to deal with all the judgemental people and it makes them less of a “socializer”. So people, get your judgy eyes off us please. We’re probably way better than you, go get a mirror and judge the person who stares back instead.

Despite all this, reading still rocks! And all these points easily get overshadowed due to my love for it.

So, that was all. What are your thoughts on this? Do you relate to any of this stuff being a reader? Is there any other drawback you feel like you experience being a reader? And if you’re not a reader, what did it feel like having an insight of our lives? Let me know all in the comments πŸ˜€.

  1. I love this post Nehal!! πŸ’œ I especially relate to numbers 2 & 3 πŸ˜‚ For me personally, my pronunciation skills have gone down the drain because of reading, especially since I very rarely listen to audiobooks. I imagine that words are pronounced one way as I’m reading but then it turns out they’re pronounced another way and it’s just so embarrassing when I say them wrong in public πŸ™ˆπŸ˜

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Abby!
Ah, I’m secretly glad you relate to the third point, I thought I was the only one πŸ˜‚.
Oh man, that sucks! πŸ˜‚ but it has happened to me too, especially when reading PJO, I couldn’t even get the named of Poseidon and Hades right 🀦🏻

      1. I wish I could go inside one of my books🀩
Its like whenever I finish reading, I am into a world that’s not at all attractive and then sorta all the problems in my life crash in at that very moment.πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

  3. Such a great post Nehal!! I can relate to almost everything you said. I find it really annoying when people judge me based on it πŸ˜’
I too prefer hardcopy over ebooks because of my poor eye health
That 2nd point is sooo true!!! When I finish reading, situation gets even worse. I’ll start hating every single thing in real life and obsess over the fictional world!! I know it’s too bad.. But agree it or not, every reader reads to get away from the reality.

    1. Thank you Pavithra! I know right, people’s judgy eyes can be pretty exhausting πŸ˜‘.
I know right!! Sometimes when I’m reading, and finish the book, all I can think about is why I can’t have problems like those characters or THEY can’t have problems like us!
      Thanks for reading Pavithra!!

  4. I honestly do not care about the drawbacks, the goodness of reading overweighs them by a lot!
But I agree, the schedule thing is true! And the judging thing too, because people think you are this introverted person, who does not care at all about the real world- we do care a little less, but it is not non-existent.

  5. I agree with you! And the fact that some people judge me for reading just makes me a little sad since they don’t even read and don’t know the feeling of falling in love with a character (;

  6. Hmm. People have never judged me because of books. And I don’t care about my eyesight. Like it’s already getting worse because of the online classes. And books r more important than online classes, so yeah. Also, am I in anyway pressuring u to write Avy and someone’s story?

    1. 😞i wish I couldn’t care about my eyesight either, but I do.
      Thanks for reading Panna πŸ˜„.
And no, you’re not pressuring me into writing avy and “someone’s” story πŸ˜‚. I like the pressure in this case, motivates me coz I love writing about them πŸ˜ƒ

  7. Nehal this was such a great discussion!! Ah yes but despite all of them reading is still incredible and without the consequences would be dire… definitely agree on people expectations of us being a writer and assuming we have good vocabulary and all… ah if only our favourite authors writing styles were transferrable it’s by reading their books!

  8. Ugh the people expect to be a writer part is SO true! πŸ˜πŸ˜‚ I have friends that literally give me all the writing and editing work just because I read πŸ˜‚ I have πŸ‘“ but still read ebooks but I have this one moment in a day where I freak out over my number πŸ˜….

  9. I agree with the eyesight, but unfortunately i am so blind as a bat that it going worse wouldnt even make a difference at all. πŸ˜‚
People should appreciate being able to see in HD without having to pay someone πŸ˜‚ just to be able to see πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

  10. This is such a relatable post, I loved it!
I also like to write, but I don’t really want to publish any of my works because I couldn’t handle the pressure of it all. πŸ˜‚ So I do feel like I’m missing out of something as a lot of bookish people want to become writers.
The second is so relatable!! I love a good escapism, but sometimes books do too much of a good job. πŸ˜…
Have you ever considered buying an ebook reader? Their screen is not like mobile phones, tablets, or laptops, so they are not harmful for your eyesight. I love my Kindle!

    1. I feel you there, I do πŸ˜‚.
      I know right 😭.
Oh no, I haven’t. I usually just avoid ebooks and listen to audiobooks instead 😜. But I might try it.
      Thanks a lot Morgan πŸ˜€
