Discussion Post: 5 Books That Did Not Quite Live Up To Their Hype For Me

Hey Pals!! Today, I’m going to sharing 5 books that I read and felt like they were a little over-hyped. These books aren’t necessarily bad, but just not as amazing as they sounded either. Let’s begin!

Disclaimer: I do not mean to insult these books, or their authors, or anyone who loves them. These are just my personal preferences. I don’t mean to offend anyone.

1: Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This book is a Cinderella retelling. Wow Nehal, nobody knew that! Thanks for stating the so unobvious fact.

So anyways, I went into this book with super high expectations, because I had heard so many good things about it. And I’m not saying that it did not live up to the expectations, the thing is, after I got used to the story, I actually started to feel pretty immersed in it, and I was just swept away reading this book. But as soon as I finished it, I don’t know why but all those love feelings about it vanished. Like, I cannot connect to it the same way now as I did when reading it. It was a good book, a fun read when you’re reading it, but that’s it for it. It wasn’t a book that was memorable or anything…it was just fine.

2: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass

And that’s me signing my death warrant 😶😂.

I really don’t know what was wrong with this book, what made me feel like I didn’t absolutely love it, but all I know is that I didn’t. I enjoyed it a good amount when I read it, but I could not find myself connecting to it at an emotional level, or even caring about the characters at all. I guess Elena’s bragging and her inability to act like a normal person kinda pissed me off. The girl has faced so much but for some reason, on top of making her the strongest assassin in the book, the author also made her someone who never cries, never allows herself to be overwhelmed by her losses or just, you know, act like a normal girl who has suffered a lot, and it was done to a point that it got super annoying. I’m currently reading the second book, and from what I’ve heard is that after reading more and more books in the series, the first two don’t even have any significance left anymore, which…I’m just, how can I not be less interested in a book I’m reading if you say that about it to me!?

I am yet to read the rest of the series, so maybe I’ll like it later though.

3: The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Okay, before you freak out, hear me out, okay?

I have never in my life had expectations as huge as I had for this particular series. I was severely disappointed!

Like I totally loved reading the first book, everything was so fast-paced and adventurous, but it never made it to my favorite series list or anything as I had expected it to. Moving on, the series went totally downhill from there. The second book was totally unnecessary and the third book…man, do I have serious issues with it! Like, that book was so freaking long considering nothing was happening. And what the hell is wrong with Katniss! She never feels? At the death of THAT PARTICULAR character, I did not shed a single tear, why? Because we never got to see Katniss’ emotions upon that death. All we got was the dying part, and then Katniss going into shock or something, I don’t know, I just found it was too unrealistic.

4: Paper Towns by John Green

This was another severe disappointment. Well guess what? I have learned not to have high expectations…like ever!! It’s not healthy dude.

There is this mystery in this book where this really popular girl in school- Margo, disappears and the main character- Quentin, whom she hasn’t ever talked to in her life until last night, thinks she has left clues for him to find her…or something like that. Now for the part where I tell you what I didn’t like: it is unnecessarily long and throughout the majority of the book, the characters are just trying to solve the “Margo-mystery” and nothing actually happens but for them failing continuously. I was hooked only because I wanted that mystery to be solved, and believe me, the long wait was so not worth it. The book ended in the most cliché, not at all surprising or plot-twisting way, and it was all just super meh!

5: Tunnel of Bones by V.E. Schwab

This is the sequel to City of Bones and I really enjoyed the first book, didn’t really care about this one though. Looking back on it, both of these were kind of bleh.

These books are middle grade paranormal, what with all the chaotic poltergeists and the ghost best friends…oh, and the dead main character who can see the souls of the dead and has to “send them on”. Jokes aside, I really enjoyed the first book, but it did not have any lasting impression on me, it was easily forgettable. And the second book was just like a replica of the first one, and I was bored of the same plotline, so I didn’t like it much.
